China Unicom announced yesterday that it is poised to launch Wophone, their own mobile OS based on the Linux kernel. Wophone would be the first mobile OS to be developed entirely in China.
According to a report by the Global Times, China Unicom has enlisted large manufacturers to produce phones under the Wophone moniker. Such manufacturers as Motorola, HTC, TCL, Huawei and Samsung.
Interestingly, the Wophone offensive is a direct stab at the Symbian market share in China. The offensive also aims to bring more users to China Unicom and bring forth the advantages of it’s own WCDMA network.
I’m looking forward to seeing some UI mockups and design sheets. A topic to be followed closely.
